The War on Poverty was declared by president Lyndon B. Johnson on January 8th, 1964, and cost more than all U.S. military wars combined. Many Americans were living in poverty during the 1960's, and the War on Poverty has made the rate of Americans living in poverty go down by about ten percent. Both the middle class and the lower class in this time period lived in poverty, and Johnson was determined to do something about it. In the year 1960, approximately 22.1% of Americans were living in poverty, which is skyrocketed as compared to today's standards. Over the past 50 years, the War on Poverty has lowered the rate of Americans living in poverty by about ten percent.
